Jason Ritter now reproposes to the actress on a regular basis to make up for the snafu.
Melanie Lynskey had no idea her now-husband, Jason Ritter, had asked her to marry him. The 46-year-old Yellowjackets star shared the story of the "confusing" proposal she received prior to marrying the Parenthood star.
"My husband's first proposal was so confusing. I didn't know what was happening," Lynskey shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
She said they'd been looking at rings and she found one she liked only to decide against it because it "looks like an engagement ring."
When Ritter later gifted her the same ring, Lynskey said it "didn't cross my mind" that it was anything other than a gift. This exchange was closely followed by a "strange speech," where Lynskey was worried they were breaking up. After Ritter assured her they weren't splitting, she replied, "Well, thank you, lovely, good chat."
Days later, Lynskey said they visited Ritter's family for Christmas, "And he said, 'We're engaged!' I said, 'Are we? Oh!'"
Calling the moment "so confusing," Lynskey shared, "Since then, he's been very cute and he's been proposing to me over and over, which is very sweet."
The couple publicly announced their engagement in early 2017. They tied the knot in 2020 and share a daughter, who was born in December 2018.
This isn't the first time Lynskey has spoken about Ritter's frequent proposals. In July 2023, she opened up to Shut Up Evan: The Newsletter, saying, "The first time he proposed it wasn't great, so he reproposes all the time to make up for it, which is really cute."
In April 2023, Lynskey opened up to ET about how she knew her husband was "the one."
"There was something about his willingness to have a conversation always, even in our darkest and most difficult moments, which, there were a few," Lynskey reflected to ET. "He would always talk about it. He was always willing to take responsibility. And he's kind, he's kind to people. That's the most important thing to me. And he's talented. I can't be with someone who's not talented. That's a big thing for me."
